Geotagging photos fun
A couple of people of asked me how I geotagged my photos from holiday in the peak district.
- Make sure the time on your camera matches the time on the gps, check the timezone as well.
- Go for a nice walk, take along the GPS receiver, leave it on so it can record your route. Most simple gps units will do this, you don't need to spend a lot of money.
- Get hold of the wonderful gpsbabel software, this will let you download the route from your gps device on to your PC. You'll need to install the drivers and get hold of the right cable for you GPS unit as well.
- Follow the instructions on the gpsbabel site for transferring your route on to your computer as a GPX file.
- Transfer the photos on to your computer.
- Download the clever gpicsync, this will load the route and compare the time of the photos with points on your route and then automatically update the photos with the position information. You can produce a file to load in to google earth at the same time.
- You're done - both picasa and flickr automatically handle photos with geotags and place them on a map for you. If you use flickr make sure to change your flickr settings to allow it to process the geotagginging information.
